The toy trade has run through the Parrish family since 1875. James, son of Brian & Linda (Company Owners), is carrying on the family tradition having spent his recent years at Toys Direct to Your Door.
In this interview, James talks about his role in the family business, what he most enjoys about the toy industry, and tells us about his former career as a tennis trainer.
James, firstly how long have you been working at Toys Direct To Your Door?
Since January 2007
And before joining the family business on a full time basis, we hear you used to be a tennis coach? That's quite a career change.
Yes but I’ve been playing tennis since the age of 5 and I fancied a change. I know I shouldn’t say it but dad’s not as young as he thinks and we carry some pretty heavy stock. I still play tennis at least twice a week.
Describe a typical day at Toys Direct To Your Door, and the perks of working with your family.
My main jobs are picking orders and collecting stock from the other warehouses since we have grown out of the original one.
I also run the EBay side of the business and set up short clips for You Tube. Believe me, there are no perks for working for your family!
What do you enjoy most about the toy industry?
You know what they say about boys and their toys so it’s great, especially as I have an excuse to play with them.
Finally, it doesn't seem long since the kids were off school for Easter does it? But half term is fast approaching - which toys do you expect to be particularly popular?
It will all depend on the weather as usual here in the UK. If the sun shines it will be all the outdoor stuff, if not Playmobil and Sylvanian Families are our top toys.
